Cosmetology
Program Description:
This course offers students the opportunity to learn about the art of hair design while earning hours toward the 1,400 hours required by Washington State for a hair design license. The course consists of both lecture and lab periods in all phases of theory and science of cosmetology. Juniors who successfully complete the first year will be eligible to return to second year. Students who successfully complete year 2, option 2, plus summer school classes, will have the opportunity to meet the 1400 hours required for eligibility to take the WA state exam to become a Washington state hair designer.
Beginning in September 2016, second year Cosmetology students will choose from one of two paths towards hourly completion. The two options that students will choose from are listed below.
Option 1) Regular session 2 timeframe – Same hours as all other session 2 students, 11:15 a.m. to 1:45 p.m., Monday through Friday. Students who choose this path will be short the number of hours to complete licensure, but they may take their transcript to another school to finish. This schedule will allow students more flexibility to participate in athletics or other after school activities. School bus transportation will be available every day by the schools that provide transportation. Summer school will be available to these students to acquire additional hours.
Option 2) Extended day - 11:15 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday and 11:15 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. on Friday. Students choosing the extended day path and who attend summer school will have the opportunity to meet the 1400 hour requirement to be eligible to take the WA state hair design license exam. Students will need to have their own transportation after school on Monday through Thursday.

Cosmetology
- Students must have at least junior standing and be 16 years of age or older
- Reading proficiency at 9th grade level
- Excellent high school attendance record
- Must pass 1st year program with a B grade or better to qualify for 2nd year; limited space available
- Second year students choosing option two, the extended day, must provide own transportation after school on Monday through Thursday
- Health, biology, and speech are all classes recommended to have taken prior to this class
- Successful completion of Integrated Math 1 or Algebra 1, highly recommended
- Good physical coordination: no leg or back difficulties, good finger dexterity, and good eye-hand coordination
- Valid Social Security number is required for state licensing exam
- Upon acceptance into the program, student and parent/guardian must participate in the Orientation/Interview

Year 1:
- Professional uniform is required to be worn daily. The vendor is DressCode Uniforms, Color Black, V-Neck item # CHE-2968-PWTB-size ($26) and Pants item # CHE-4001-PWTW-size ($16), www.dresscodeit.com
- Students are required to purchase three mannequin heads approximately $35 each ordered through CTA business office.
- Set of 3 “Salon Fundamentals” books $155. Books will follow student to second year. Order through CTA business office.
Year 2:
- Hot Tools cosmetology kit, includes 2 mannequin heads. The student will retain the kit to start their career after graduation. The cost for the kit is approximately $400, ordered through CTA business office. The kit prices are based on previous year’s prices and information that is currently available and is subject to change.
- Professional uniform is same as first year.
- CPR training $40.
- State board prep optional: 1 mannequin head and supplies approximately $100
