Applied Medical Sciences
Program Description:
The Applied Medical Sciences program is a one-year course for juniors and seniors interested in pursuing a career in health care.
The AMS program provides core skills and knowledge necessary for entry-level employment in the healthcare field.
During the course, students are introduced to anatomy and physiology, medical vocabulary, and nursing fundamentals. Students earn their Healthcare Provider CPR and First Aid cards through the American Heart Association as well as a Certificate of Completion for Applied Medical Sciences program. Students, who qualify, may apply to take the Washington State Nursing Assistant Certification examination.
Students completing the course and earning a grade of “B” or higher in related course areas, are eligible for credits from local community colleges.

Prerequisites:
Approximately 70 percent of time will be devoted to theory and professionalism; 30 percent devoted to lab. Clinical hours are required in long term care in order to qualify for state certification. Saturday clinical rotations are required, hours to be determined.

Scrubs, lab coat, and gait belt will be ordered at orientation. Information regarding resources for these items will be available from the instructors at Parent/Student Orientation. Cost is approximately $80.00 plus tax. Purchase separately white shoes and a watch with a second hand. See immunizations under prerequisites. Family medical insurance or student accident insurance is required. There are also required costs for CPR $50, name tag $2, optional fees for HOSA dues $15, and state HOSA registration $35. Nursing assistant registration is $48* and for those who qualify to take the state test it is an additional $110*. *These fees are set by the state and are subject to change.
Note: Student accident insurance is available through your sending high school.

Industry Certification:
- Nursing Assistant Certified (NAC) if qualified
- Healthcare Provider CPR and First Aid Cards

Prerequisites:
- Reading proficiency at 11th grade level
- Must have successfully completed Algebra 1 or Integrated Math 1
- Completed biology with a “C” or higher
- Must have proof of immunizations including MMR, Hepatitis B series, and an updated Tdap
- Proof of negative TB test
- Influenza vaccine
- Excellent high school attendance record
- Ability to pass a WA state police background check and valid Social Security number are required to attend the clinical rotation for certification
- Upon acceptance into the program, student and parent/guardian must participate in the Orientation at the Cascadia Tech Academy
- Students may choose to participate in HOSA, Health Occupations Student Association
- Course in Health Occupations is recommended
