Attendance Policy
When SkillsCenter instructors are asked by employers for recommendations regarding former students, one of the first questions is, "How is his/her attendance and participation in class?" For this reason, attendance standards matching those expected in industry are a priority at the SkillsCenter.Class participation brings positive benefits – homework is reduced, classroom instruction is not missed and the advantages of working with peers are realized. Positive instructor recommendations for future jobs, higher education and scholarships will also result in benefits for years to come. Hands-on instruction can only be offered to students in attendance.
"ALWAYS CALL IN ABSENCES… ALWAYS CALL IN ABSENCES… ALWAYS CALL IN ABSENCES… "
CALL-IN: If a student is absent, it is the student's (or parent/guardian’s) responsibility to call the attendance line (604-1077) and inform the Skills Center that he/she will not be attending and the reason for the absence. For absences to be excused, calls must be made within the first 30 minutes of class the day of the absence. Called in absences are considered “excused absences” and a student’s overall grade will reflect a 2% deduction due to lack of participation from being gone. However, students do have the opportunity to make up work/time to reinstate grade loss.
NO CALL: If a student is absent without calling the attendance line this is considered an “unexcused absence”. No calls will also result in an overall 2% grade deduction due to lack of participation.
MAKE-UP WORK: Students have the opportunity to make up work and lab time, or develop an alternative activity with instructor approval if the student’s absences are called-in. If work/time is not made up the student is subject to a grade reduction.
CREDIT LOSS: Once a student has accrued nine (9) absences they lose credit. If there were extenuating circumstances surrounding the absences, students may file for a Credit Appeal Hearing with a Skills Center Administrator. Credit Appeal Forms are available from the Attendance Secretary in the main office. The student is required to attend the hearing with an administrator to determine whether the credit will be reinstated. Completing this form and attending the hearing does not guarantee credit reinstatement.
NOTIFICATION OF ABSENCE: To prearrange an absence of more than 2 consecutive days, students must fill out a Notification of Absence form. These forms are located in the main office.
EARLY RELEASE: Students who have appointments or need to leave school early must sign out in the main office and have permission from a parent/guardian before leaving campus. (ie.note, phone call, etc.)
SCHOOL REQUIRED RELEASE: School-required Releases are arranged by the sending school. Skills Center instructors will be notified if a student or school is affected. Examples: snow day, mandatory class meeting, early release, late start. School- required Releases are not counted against a student for being absent.
