
Applied Medical Sciences
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
The Applied Medical Sciences program is a two-year course for juniors and seniors interested in pursuing a career in health care.
The AMS program provides core skills and knowledge necessary for entry-level employment in the healthcare field. The second year program builds on these skills and develops new ones in the area of emergency medicine and delegation of specific nursing duties.
During the first year, students are introduced to anatomy and physiology, medical vocabulary, and nursing fundamentals. Students earn their Healthcare Provider CPR and First Aid cards through the American Heart Association as well as a Certificate of Completion in Nursing Assistant training. They are eligible to take the Washington State Nursing Assistant Certification examination.
Students completing the first and second year with a grade of “B” or higher, are eligible for credits from Clark College.

SECOND YEAR:
The second year student further develops knowledge of anatomy and physiology with added emphasis on pathology as well as mastering more advanced medical terminology. These students receive training and certification in the Fundamentals of Caregiving. Students may choose to apply to the EMT-Basic program which begins in late March and is taught at the Northwest Regional Training Center. The second year course has particular additional requirements: EMT – students who qualify must be 18 to pass the certification examination to receive credit.

The student must be 18 years old when this program starts (usually in March) Spring Quarter and must have a B average in AMS II. Selection is determined by the instructor based on the past performance and limited number of available spaces. - Therapeutic communiction with emphasis on serving the global community

PREREQUISITES:
Applied Medical Sciences I
- Reading proficiency at 11th grade level
- Must have successfully completed Algebra 1 or Integrated Math 1
- Completed biology with a “C” or higher
- Must have proof of immunizations including MMR, TB, and an updated Tetanus
- Excellent high school attendance record
Applied Medical Sciences II
- Must pass 1st year program with a B grade or better to qualify for 2nd year; limited space available
- Approved for State NAC testing
Note:
- Ability to pass a WA state police background check and valid Social Security number are required to obtain certification.
- Upon acceptance into the program, student and parent/guardian must participate in the Orientation/Interview at the Skills Center.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
- Course in Health Occupations is recommended
- Hepatitis immunization recommended
